‘This can’t be happening,’ Nadia repeated in her head, observing the panorama of desolation that was suddenly upon her.

The reptilian ships initiated evasive action to dodge the huge fragments of Teraboo that were hurtling towards them.

‘AVENGER!’ yelled Captain Thunks to Nadia through the intercom in her helmet. ‘HELP US!’

Nadia looked at Shakuun’s body. It was time to do what an Avenger should do: to serve and protect, to help, to defeat. Avenger Nadia returned from the darkness and flew towards the reptilian’s body, which was drifting in space. She picked him up and towed him towards the hangar of the Ev-F battle cruiser. At the entrance she tossed him inside, where the medical workers assigned to the zone rushed towards the fallen Avenger. The reptilians looked at the Avenger, who stared back at them from outside the ship. Once they began to attend to Shakuun, she flew off in the direction of the bulk of the fleet.

The first remnants of Teraboo were now approaching her position. These were only small chunks but the Avenger activated her force field nonetheless, shielding herself from potential minor collisions that could damage her helmet.

The reptilian ships were speeding towards quadrants where their calculations estimated they would receive fewer hits from meteorites, though in reality it was absolutely unpredictable. The combat cruisers opened fire on the largest meteorites with the aim of shattering them or changing their trajectory, but the result was chaotic.

Avenger Nadia appeared in the midst of the meteorite shower that was raining down on the ships with no plan in mind. One of the transport vessels near the head of the fleet was hit by gigantic icicles that didn’t perforate the ship but did manage to tip it over, and the cosmic energy released by the explosion of Teraboo caught the vessel, destroying it completely.

‘Make the leap to hyperspace! Do something!’ Nadia yelled at the captains on the ships. ‘Get out of here however you can and to wherever you can!’ She wished she knew what she could do to help the fleet but the situation was beyond her. ‘Maybe I just came here to die,’ she thought to herself resignedly, immobile behind her force shield.

‘Avenger Nadia,’ a reptilian voice called out inside her helmet. ‘We’ll be passing close to your position. We’re asking you, please, enter our hangar.’

Nadia didn’t respond.

‘Do you hear me, Avenger?’ insisted the voice. ‘This is Captain Thunk’s Ht-I combat cruiser. I’m sending you the coordinates for velocity 001.5. Have you received them?’

Silence.

‘Avenger, have you received them?’

There was still no reply. The operator on combat cruiser Hy-I looked at the head of positioning and telecommunications, who in turn swivelled his head towards Captain Thunks.

‘Proceed,’ said Thunks from the command circle.

The cruiser continued on its planned path towards the target coordinates despite the continual blows from small meteorites that were almost the size of a motorbike.

‘We’ve reached velocity 001.5, Captain,’ announced the head of positioning and telecommunications.

Not another word was said on the bridge. There was a tense wait in which every instant felt eternal.
